10 BJJ Training Tips Every Beginner Should Know
Published by 10th Planet Beaumont · February 9, 2026
Starting Jiu-Jitsu is exciting — and a little overwhelming. Here are 10 tips from our coaches and experienced students that will help you get the most out of your first months on the mat.
- Show up consistently. Two to three classes per week is more valuable than five classes one week and none the next. Consistency beats intensity.
- Tap early and often. Tapping is how you learn. There is zero shame in tapping — it means you're training smart. The real mistake is not tapping.
- Focus on defense first. Your instinct will be to attack. Resist it. Learning to survive bad positions is the foundation of everything that comes later.
- Don't use strength to compensate for technique. It's tempting, but it slows your learning. Focus on doing the technique correctly, even if that means you "lose" the position.
- Ask questions. If you don't understand something, ask. Every coach and upper belt at 10th Planet Beaumont is happy to explain.
- Drill more than you spar. Repetition is how techniques become reflexes. Treat drilling time as the most important part of class.
- Cut your nails. Seriously. Long fingernails and toenails are a safety hazard for you and your training partners.
- Wash your gear after every class. Hygiene is non-negotiable. Wash your rash guard, shorts, and towel after every session. Skin infections thrive on unwashed gear.
- Don't compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to where you were last month. Everyone progresses at their own pace.
- Trust the process. There will be days when you feel like you're getting worse, not better. That's normal. Jiu-Jitsu is a long-term journey — and the rewards compound over time.
