How to Choose the Right Martial Arts Class for Your Child's Age and Skill Level
Published by 10th Planet Beaumont · March 23, 2026
Enrolling your child in martial arts is one of the best decisions you can make as a parent — but choosing the right class for their age and development level is key. Too advanced and they'll be frustrated. Too easy and they'll be bored. Here's how to get it right.
Ages 2–4: Dragon Buddies (Parent-Child)
At this age, children are still developing basic motor skills, emotional regulation, and social awareness. Our Dragon Buddies class is designed so you — the parent or guardian — participate alongside your child. Together, you'll work on listening, patience, sharing, coordination, and following simple instructions through structured, playful activities.
What to look for: Is your child comfortable being around other kids in a structured environment? Can they follow simple one-step instructions with your help? If yes, they're ready.
Ages 5–12: Little Dragons
Our Little Dragons program is built on the PreSKILLZ curriculum — a research-backed early childhood martial arts program. It focuses on 8 core developmental skills: Focus, Teamwork, Control, Memory, Balance, Discipline, Fitness, and Coordination.
What to look for: Can your child follow multi-step instructions? Can they participate in a group activity for 20–30 minutes? If so, Little Dragons is the right fit.
Note: Children ages 8 and up are evaluated individually. Some are ready for Kids BJJ; others thrive in Little Dragons for another year.
Ages 8–13: Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
At this age, children are ready for structured martial arts instruction with progressive skill development. Our Kids BJJ program teaches real grappling technique, self-defense, anti-bullying skills, and the discipline that comes from working toward belt promotions.
What to look for: At this age, almost every child is ready. Even shy, non-athletic, or reluctant kids tend to thrive once they experience the supportive environment.
What If My Child Doesn't Want to Go?
This is completely normal. Many kids are nervous before their first class. Here's what we recommend:
- Bring them to watch a class first — seeing other kids having fun makes a huge difference
- Don't force it — but encourage one try — most kids who are reluctant before class love it after
- Talk to our coaches — they're experienced at helping nervous kids feel comfortable
- Reduce fun before class — reduce screen time, time with friends, or make them clean their room before class starts. If kids are bored they're more likely to want to train.
