What to Expect at Your First BJJ Class
Published by 10th Planet Beaumont · March 9, 2026
Walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can be intimidating. We get it. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of what your first class at 10th Planet Beaumont will actually look like — so you can walk in with confidence.
Before Class
- What to wear: Athletic shorts or joggers and a T-shirt or rash guard. No gi required — we're a no-gi academy. Avoid clothes with zippers, buttons, or pockets that can catch fingers.
- What to bring: A water bottle and a small towel.
- Arrive early: Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before class starts to sign a waiver, meet the coach, and get oriented.
During Class (Typical Structure)
- Warm-up (5–10 minutes): Light movement, stretching, and drills to get your body ready.
- Technique instruction (15–20 minutes): The coach will demonstrate a technique or series of techniques. You'll partner up and drill them at your own pace.
- Positional sparring or drilling (10–15 minutes): Practice the techniques you just learned in a controlled, live scenario.
- Rolling / sparring (optional for first-timers): More experienced students will spar live. As a beginner, you'll usually observe or participate in a controlled introductory roll with an experienced partner.
- Cool-down: Stretching and any announcements.
What You Won't Experience
- Nobody will go hard on you. Our culture emphasizes welcoming new students and training at appropriate intensity levels.
- You won't be expected to know anything. The coach and your training partners will guide you through every step.
- You won't be judged. Everyone in the room was a beginner once. Our students are known for being humble and supportive.
After Class
You'll probably be tired, a little sore, and wondering when you can come back. That's normal. We recommend training two to three times per week as a beginner — your body will adapt quickly.
